Can You Dig Even More Warriors Fan Films?

The hits (and punches and baseball bats) just keep on coming! As I explained yesterday, back in 2007, I had to help judge a fan film contest of flicks based on the 1979 cult classic, The Warriors. I shared my comments on the first three movies in the contest yesterday, and now here’s my take on the remaining three movies. Watch ‘em all, give each a rank to see which you like best, and then at the end of this post, you can see if you chose the fan film that won the contest.

This one’s a mixed bag. On one hand, it had the greatest potential, transferring the Warriors to London. They had the vests, the costumes, the biggest cast, some good gags like the guy with the headband around his eyes, and so on.

At the same time, it was a bit incoherent, with no real reason as to why one scene or shot followed another. That said, it was apparently created as part of a project by a charity that helps reintegrate the homeless into ‘normal’ society, so how hard can you really be on it?

It had tons of promise and all the right elements, but didn’t have enough focus. I’d love to see them take another crack at it though; I think they’d come up with something special.

This documentary was more organized than the other one, and I liked the titles and the comparisons of shots between the movie and the present day. The camera work was steady and clear. Like the other one, it lacks narration, so you don’t know what you’re looking at, and that put it at a disadvantage. I would have liked to have seen more locations, too, even if they were just subway platforms. Perhaps the two documentary filmmakers should pool their resources and make one uber-fan doc; I’d love to see the results.

I typically don’t like fake trailers with footage taken from other sources, and this is no exception. There were a few good gags and the synch was done well, but I remain unmoved. This kind of thing is the lowest form of fan film because it requires so little effort comparatively.

OK, you’ve seen the movies…you’ve ranked them from the best (Number 1) to the least favorite (Number 6)–and you got a gimmie that Warriors Then & Now, listed yesterday, wasn’t the winner, since I mentioned it’s not online yet I said you could pick the winner based on viewing flicks. So who won?

Well, when I sent in my rankings to Fan Films Quarterly–which sponsored the contest–I ranked them in the order you just saw them, with yesterday’s ranked 1, 2 and 3, and today’s ranked 4, 5 and 6. And for once, I was right about things–myself and the other judges picked as the contest winner. What did you think of the flicks? Leave your comments below!
