Just in time for the holidays, the wildly popular fan film series, Star Trek: Phase II (AKA Star Trek: New Voyages), is releasing “Blood and Fire: Part One” tomorrow, Saturday, December 20.
The series’ first new episode since “World Enough And Time”—which featured George Takei reprising his trademark role as Sulu—the new episode features more Trek alumni, from Denise Crosby (“Tasha Yar” from Star Trek: The Next Generation) to TNG scribe David Gerrold, who directed and co-wrote “Blood and Fire.”
Although the story takes place in the Original Series timeline, Gerrold in fact wrote the script decades ago for TNG, where it was shelved because of the mention of a gay crewman aboard the Enterprise.
According to the Phase II site,
The horrific story finds a battle damaged Enterprise caught between an incurable contagion that threatens to overrun the galaxy, the pull of a dying star, and Klingons poised to attack. Like all of the best Star Trek episodes, “Blood and Fire” finds the Enterprise crew facing their own human fears and failings as they have to weigh the costs and decide how much personal risk to take in order to save the people around them.
While the episode comes out tomorrow, you can get a jump on it and download the gripping opening teaser at the show’s website. After viewing the episode, if you want to find out more about New Voyages/Phase II, you might want to consider reading my book on fan films, Homemade Hollywood, where I interviewed James Cawley, the show’s producer/star, extensively in the final chapter, “The Future of Fan Films.”
