Mega Man Fan Film Trailer Now Online

I briefly mentioned the upcoming Mega Man fan film a while back, and now its trailer has landed online. The short has made quite a splash, too, getting covered around the gaming blogosphere. I never played the game, so a lot of it is lost on me, but filmmaker Eddie Lebron has done a nice job, clearly making the most of a miniscule budget. To get more on the story, you should look here, plus Protodude’s Rockman Corner notes that Lebron is doing an ongoing Q&A in the forum at Capcom-Unity.

Why Guns n’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy album is the Phantom Menace of Rock

gnrtpmWith the long Thanksgiving weekend ahead, FCT is going waaaay off topic; enjoy your Turkey Day and Black Friday, and we’ll see you here on Cyber Monday with more juicy, fan film goodness.

Remember when you were a kid and they had those lists of the eerie coincidences between Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy? You know, the lists like “Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy; Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln” and so on? Well, it’s a different day and age now, but some things never change. In honor of a certain notable event that took place this past Sunday, here’s why Chinese Democracy is the Phantom Menace of Rock. Read More »

Captain Marvel Saves Brazil in Fan Film

Captain MarvelEven though Marvel Comics is the biggest comic book company around, the DC Comics characters get all the fan film attention. Last week, FCT took a look at some of the Marvel-based fan flicks that have been flying under the radar. This one…well, it sort of isn’t a Marvel character…buuuut it kind of is, but…aw, forget it; I give up.

Captain Marvel (AKA Shazam!) is actually a character owned by DC Comics, although his name would definitely lead you to think it’s a Marvel Comics character. And of course, you’d be right, ‘cause Marvel, too, has had a batch of different characters that each used the name “Captain Marvel” as well. We’re not going to deal with either Marvel or DC’s comics today, though, focusing instead on a fan film based on a comic book by Ebal Publishing. Confused yet? Read More »

FCT Roadtrip Report: New England Fan Experience

new england fan experienceIt’s almost midnight as I write this—I just got in from hours of driving and haven’t unpacked yet, so it’s short one today. I hit the New England Fan Experience in Cambridge, MA over the weekend to both show tons of fan films during two separate programs and introduce my brand-new masterpiece humble tome, . Books were sold, flicks were screened, promo postcards were handed out throughout the convention and, all in all, it was a decent book launch. But that’s not all that happened. Read More »

She-Hulk Fan Films Bring The Love

she hulkEven though Marvel Comics is the biggest comic book company around, the DC Comics characters get all the fan film attention. This week, FCT takes a look at some of the Marvel-based fan flicks that have been flying under the radar.

I believe it was the noted comic book enthusiast Shakespeare who once said “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” Damn straight (although for the record, I’m entirely ). We guys are endlessly capable of forgetting something or other, thereby ticking off the women who love us (and even more so the ones that don’t). There isn’t a guy alive who doesn’t know what it’s like to have all that fury aimed right at him. And yet, even as we annoy the hell out of them, women love us, and now, thanks to fan productions, I have the proof.

Let me make a blanket statement here: Nowhere in the realm of fan films is the heady, bizarre mix of love and fury more readily apparent than in homemade She-Hulk movies. Read More »

FCT Hosts Fan Films, Debuts Homemade Hollywood Book at New England Fan Experience This Weekend!

new england fan experienceI’ve been doing a lot of roadtrips recently to promote my new book, , and this weekend ain’t no exception. I’ll be hosting not one but two programs about fan films at the New England Fan Experience, a pretty wild convention in Cambridge, MA that starts today and runs through Sunday.

I’ll also finally have brand-spankin’-new copies of with me, hot off the presses and ready for me to deface sign for people (my publisher promises I’ll have books, even if they have to ship ‘em direct to the hotel; they swear. And if I don’t have books in tow, I’ll swear, so virulently it’d make Kevin Smith blush).

For both programs, I’ll be showing some of the greatest fan films ever on the big screen, while regaling you with stories about why the filmmakers set themselves on fire, or swung off buildings, or spent their life savings on their flicks. We’ll talk about the legality of fan films, why the earliest fan films were made by con men, and maybe even a bit about the future of the medium. Read More »

Fan Film Gives Elektra A Hand

elektraEven though Marvel Comics is the biggest comic book company around, the DC Comics characters get all the fan film attention. This week, FCT takes a look at some of the Marvel-based fan flicks that have been flying under the radar.

Elektra is something of an oddity in the comic book world, in that she’s not really a high-profile character, but everyone still knows about her. A few years ago, she made a brief foray into feature films, portrayed by Jennifer Garner in the box-office dud, Daredevil, and then her own headlining, even-duddier flick, Elektra. Then there was a co-starring role in , but otherwise, I can’t recall any other fan productions featuring her. So leave it for Chris Notarile to fill in the gap. Read More »

Batman: Dead End Director’s Hunter Prey Peek!

Hunter PreyI know, I know—I said it was gonna be “all Marvel, all the time” this week, but that was before io9, the biggest Sci-Fi blog on the planet, dropped a bombshell on fan film lovers: the first major interview with Sandy Collora about his upcoming feature film debut, Hunter Prey.

Collora, you may recall, was the director of the classic DC Comics fan flicks Batman: Dead End and World’s Finest, and now he’s hard at work on this otherworldly adventure. It looks cool, it looks mean, it looks…well, really freaking hot on the set.

I’ve written about Hunter Prey before, but the new interview is your plentiful opportunity to learn more—a lot more—about it: The interview runs nearly 3,400 words (plus a few gorgeous pics that qualify for that old cliche that a picture is worth a thousand…ah, you get the idea). Early on, Collora is upfront about what fan films did for his career, and why he chose to make them, explaining: Read More »

Captain America Throws His Mighty Fan Film

captain americaEven though Marvel Comics is the biggest comic book company around, the DC Comics characters get all the fan film attention. This week, FCT takes a look at some of the Marvel-based fan flicks that have been flying under the radar.

Captain America has always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to movies. I recall watching his direct-to-VHS feature film debut in the late ’80s, with that terrible flick that starred J.D. Salinger’s son as Cap. More recently, his shield—not even the hero himself!—got a cameo in Iron Man, and last week, it was announced that Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III) will direct something called First Avenger: Captain America. Well OK. In the fan film world, it’s not much better—Cap has a surprise cameo in the Bloodrayne fan film (oops, guess it’s not a surprise anymore), and that’s it. Until now.
